Post stitches
Post stitches are much easier to make than they seem! In this tutorial, I’m going to explain how to make front post double crochet stitches as well as back post double crochet stitches.
I’ll also be explaining how to work in front & in behind stitches.
The same technique can be used to make front post single crochet stitches, front post treble/triple crochet stitches, back post single crochet stitches, back post treble/triple crochet stitches etc.
I’m using a size 4/worsted weight yarn with a 6mm crochet hook.
To start, chain 13.
1. Starting in the third chain from the hook: dc in each chain, chain one & turn (11) - see “even edges” tutorial here
2. Dc in the first stitch. Now we’ll work a back post double crochet (bpdc) around the post of the next stitch.
To start, wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert your hook from the back of the work through to the front (pictured below).
Now move your hook in front of the post, around the post to the back of the work (see image below - second image below is what it will look like from the back side of the work).
Yarn over & pull the loop through.
Yarn over, pull through two loops.
Yarn over, pull through two loops (double crochet stitch completed).
dc in the next stitch, *bpdc, dc* repeat to end
You should end up with something that looks like this before turning (first image) & this after turning (second image). Chain one & turn (11)
3. dc in each stitch, chain one & turn (11)
4. Dc in the first stitch. Now we’ll work a front post double crochet (fpdc).
Wrap the yarn over your hook. Insert your hook through the post (as pictured below).
Yarn over & pull up a loop on the other side of the post (pictured below).
Yarn over, pull through two loops.
Yarn over, pull through two loops (front post double crochet stitch completed!).
dc in the next stitch, *fpdc, dc* repeat to end, chain one & turn (11)
5. dc in each stitch (11)
Working in front of stitches
1. Chain 13. Starting in the second chain from the hook, 11 dc, chain one & turn (11)
2. 11 dc, chain one & turn (11)
3. 2 dc. Skip the next stitch & fpdc around the next stitch.
Working in front of the fpdc you just made, make a fpdc in the skipped stitch. To do this, push the fpdc you just back & then work the fpdc stitch.
3 dc. Skip the next stitch & fpdc, then fpdc around the skipped stitch. 2 dc. Chain one & turn (11)
You should end up with something that looks like the image below.
Now we’ll work in behind the stitches.
4. 2 dc. Skip the next stitch & bpdc around the next stitch. Working behind the bpdc just made, bpdc in the skipped stitch.
To do this, push your work forward & work in behind the back post double crochet just made. I find it easier to turn my work so the back side of the work is facing me (second image).
3 dc, skip the next stitch & bpdc. Working behind the bpdc, bpdc in the skipped stitch. 2 dc, chain one & turn (11)
5. dc in each stitch (11)
