Textured stitches

Bobble stitches & puff stitches are both fun ways to add texture to any project!

Bobble stitches are a series of double crochet stitches made together. They are almost always worked on the wrong side of the piece, because once they’re secured, they “pop” forward.

I’m using a size 4/worsted weight yarn & a 5mm crochet hook in this tutorial.

This first example abbreviates to “3dctog”. In written instructions for patterns, it may say “bobble stitch with 3 dc” or something along those lines.

1. Chain 10. Starting in the second chain from the hook: sc in each stitch. Chain one & turn (9)
2. sc in the first stitch.
Next, we’ll start our first bobble stitch.
Wrap the yarn over your hook & insert your hook into the next stitch (two loops on the hook).
Draw up a loop & pull through (as if you’re making a double crochet stitch - three loops on the hook).
Next, wrap the yarn over your hook & pull through two of the three loops.

You should have two loops left on your hook.
Instead of wrapping the yarn over & pulling through the last two loops like you would to complete a double crochet stitch, wrap the yarn over your hook (three loops on the hook).
Insert your hook into the same stitch & draw up a loop (four loops on the hook).

Wrap the yarn over your hook & pull through two of the four loops (three loops left on the hook).
Wrap the yarn over your hook again (four loops on the hook).
Insert your hook into the same stitch again & draw up a loop (five loops on the hook). Wrap the yarn over your hook & pull through two of the five loops on your hook.
You should have four loops on your hook.

Wrap the yarn over your hook & pull through all four of the loops on the hook.

sc in the next stitch to secure the bobble stitch. * dc3tog, sc * repeat until the end of the row, chain one & turn (9)
3. sc in each stitch, chain one & turn (9)

Now, we’ll make a bobble stitch with four double crochets. It’s the exact same method as “3dctog”, but instead of making three incomplete double crochet stitches, you’ll make four incomplete double crochet stitches. At the end you’ll pull through five loops on your hook instead of four loops.
4dctog is my personal favourite bobble stitch to make because it adds a bit more texture than 3dctog. :)

4. sc, (4dctog, sc) repeat to end, chain one & turn (9)
5. sc in each stitch (9)

Puff stitches are another fun textured stitch to make.
To start the next row, chain one & turn.
6. Hdc in the first stitch. Chain one.
Now we’ll start our puff stitch. Wrap the yarn over your hook.

Skip the second stitch & insert your hook into the third stitch. Draw up a tall loop.

Yarn over, insert your hook into the same stitch & draw up another tall loop.
Repeat this process until you have nine loops in total on your hook.

Once you have nine loops on your hook, wrap the yarn over your hook & pull through all nine of the loops.
Chain one to secure the stitch.

Skip one stitch.
*Make a puff stitch in the next stitch, skip one stitch * repeat twice. Hdc in the last stitch, chain one & turn (9)

7. Since there’s spaces in between the puff stitches, in order to make this row even again, you’ll need to sc in the first hdc, sc in the first chain space, sc the top of puff stitch, sc in the space between the two puff stitches, sc in the top of the puff stitch, sc in the space between the two puff stitches, sc in the top of the third puff stitch, sc in the space between the puff stitch & hdc, & sc in the last hdc (9)
8-9. Repeat rows 6&7.
